Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus premiered on MTV in February of 2009, and in six episodes the Supercross superstar and his Merry Men (and one woman) have jumped out of perfectly-good airplanes without a parachute, pulled off big-wheel backflips, hydroplaned motorcycles, drifted extremely expensive cars, jumped off a 52-story building and ran over an unfortunate deer.
Beginning in Utah, Nitro Circus crossed these United States from one end to the other and went west for Episode Six, where the FlowBarrel® Bruticus Maximus awaited them at Wave House San Diego. Riding 100,000 gallons of water flowing at 30 MPH into a 10-foot grinding barrel apparently tickled the fancy of Pastrana and his crew and on December 8, 2009, MTV took over Wave House to challenge themselves on “the future of nature.”
Pastrana himself was down with a broken hand (so he said), but his partners in mayhem joined Special Guest Lunatic Chris Pontius took on the B-Max with inflatable rafts, pool toys, rubber ducks and anything else they could get their hands on. To the tune of The Ramones’ Rockaway Beach, Pontius did it naked, Hubert Rowland charged it with water wings riding a dragon. they all tried to take each other out by throwing beach balls and whatever flotsam and jetsam was handy. And they all went over the falls, every which way but loose.
And after all that mayhem, Wave House pros Greg Lazarus and Kristen Barney strapped on proper flowboards and showed them how it’s done.
The Bruticus was a classic segment of a show which included a visit to Rob Dyrdek’s Fantasy Factory, where the Nitro Circus team attempted to slam dunk a basketball from the back of mini-motorcycles. Did they pull it off? Nitro Circus is on every Sunday, and Episode Six airs March 15, 2009 on MTV.
