(Friday 30th April, 2010): SINGAPORE was the site for the first ever signing of a professional flowboarder by international boardsports brand Billabong this week. In a major coup for the ultra progressive sport of Flowboarding, Alfian Affandi put pen to paper and made history by becoming a fully fledged Billabong sponsored athlete.
"I got a job at Wavehouse Sentosa and was hoping that I could get something out of Flowboarding" explained Alfian, "So I trained really hard every single day and it paid off with me winning the first Flowboarding comp at their centre". Alfians natural transition to Flowboarding came from a love of all things boardsports, including over 10 years of involvement and organization of the Singaporean Skimboard scene. The most recent notch on his belt was the invitation to compete at the Alt Games in San Diego next month, which features competitions in numerous alternative sports, including Flowboarding. When asked of his new signing, Alfian beamed "I got sponsored by Billabong.. super stoked!! a dream come true!!.. best thing ever!!"
Alfian will join a family of the most elite Billabong sponsored Surfers, Skateboarders, Wakeboarders, and Snowboarders from all over the world. "This is a huge step for us", stated Billabong Asia Brand Manager Peter Thew, "Alfian is one of the nicest guys going around and someone who has really put time in to the progression of boardsports in our region, so the decision was easy".
The sponsorship of the Singapore national is coupled with a huge intent from Billabong to support the growth of the alternative sport of Flowboarding, with the innovators of the concept - Wavehouse. "Afli is one of those riders who is always raising the bar and pushing limits of the sport” stated Wave Operations Manager and Flow Mentor Jeff Ranta, “He is playing a key role in the progression of Flowboarding in Singapore."
Alfian can be seen in action at this Saturdays FlowJam event at the Wavehouse Sentosa Island Compound.
