Over the past few years, the sport of Flowboarding has reached an entirely new level of popularity all over the world. With four active Wave House locations in San Diego, South Africa, Singapore and Chile, in addition to countless FlowRiders and multiple international competitions as well, this up and coming extreme sport is global to say the least. Santiago, Chile, home of Wave House Santa Pizza, is one of the sport's hubs and is proud to be a contender.
Two riders from this location travelled to compete in the 2010 CBS Alt Games in San Diego, CA. Federiko Mekis, known as Fermiko to his friends, is 22 years old and Gerardo Joannon is 23. They started riding the FlowBarrel about 3 years ago and it's been strait shredding ever since.
Before being introduced to the sport, both riders were, are still are, avid surfers, drawing inspiration and style from real ocean waves. Wave House makes surfing accessible to them all the time and they love being able to ride the waves in a landlocked city, which was the original dream of CEO Tom Lochtefeld.
Of the ALT Games in May 2010, Federiko says, "They were much more than I expected, I learned many new things about the sport and the United States." Gerardo says, "It was one of my best trips because this sport was born in San Diego, and in California, there is a great culture for all board sports." While in San Diego, they surfed the Bruticus Maximus FlowBarrel and the Mission Beach waves, skated the streets and enjoyed the laid back San Diego vibe, which, they say, really makes the sport a complete culture.
Gerardo said how impressed he was by the event, specifically highlighting how the day was very organized and well executed. He also noted how incredible the level of competition was, especially compared to Chile. Both riders are now all the more motivated to work on their skills and tricks for the next competition.
Gerardo placed second in the Consolation Bracket and Federiko was eliminated in the Semis by silver medalist and former ALT Games Champ (2009) Brandon Stevens. Both riders rode amazingly well and are excited to keep practicing for future International Flowboarding events.
