Wave House Sentosa Hosts Bring Your Own Board Action Sports Event

The B.Y.O.B. at Wave House Sentosa on 17th December was a huge success with competitors coming in from various board sport disciplines. Despite the lack of sunshine there was surely no lack of action as you couldn’t turn around without seeing a kick flip, back flip or tail whip.

The event kicked off with an inaugural 5km SUP (Stand Up Paddle) Cruiser Race along the scenic beaches of Sentosa. Supported by Mana Mana Beach, this division was open to all ages and genders and saw the winner walking away with a carbon fiber paddle Starboard SUP. Jackson English, one of the world’s top paddleboarders was there to help coordinate the event. “It was fantastic to see so many stand ups out on the water. Watching the enthusiasm of all the paddlers having such a great time is a good sign for the future of stand up paddling in Singapore” he said. This was a great way to start a full day of action sports at Wave House. The fastest time went to Phil Nicole who went there and back in only 41:07.

Next up was the BMX competition that was run by SSTBMX Distro. A ramp was set up to induce mind blowing moves from a strong community of BMX bikers from both Singapore and Malaysia. This was not the first time the BMX crew has been to Wave House but it was definitely the most impressive. It was Marcus Tay who ended up being crowned King of the Box.

Once the water was cleared of paddle boards the wake surfers took over and put on a show for everyone on the beach. With local and international talent the first ever wake surf comp at Sentosa was another good sign of things to come. Multi talented local Alfian Affandi took first was some smooth and stylish surfing.

The skate event had some tight competition with some of Singapore’s top skaters bringing their boards and their skills. Although there was a little bit of rain the sun came out just long enough for them to crown a champion. A section of Wave House became a skateboard battleground with one trick being topped by the next. It was a back side feeble grind with a kickflip out pulled off by Feroze Rahman that gave him top spot on the podium.

All hell broke loose from the intensity of the Flowboarding and Bodyboarding competitions at the FlowBarrel with riders taking turns to go as big as ever. The closest fight was fought during the Strapped finals where riders, judges and the crowd all had their jaws dropped. Ashraf Yakya stole the show with his massive double flips and took first. In the bodyboard division it was Vincent Aung who took home the Carbon bodyboard with his combo of drop knee and prone skills.

BYOB was brought to you by Official Apparel Quiksilver & Roxy and also Official Beverage 100 Plus. Also special thanks to the Singapore Paddle Club for lending their strength to support the SUP race. Check out the winners list below and may the flow be with you.
