7-9 October 2011
Wave House, Gateway Theatre of Shopping
The biggest names in the sport of flowriding are set to arrive in Durban to compete in the FLOW Championships scheduled for 7th to 9th October 2011 at Wave House, Gateway Theatre of Shopping. This global spectacle has seen athletes qualifying from countries such as USA, Chile, Singapore, Europe and UAE to test their mettle against the formidable team from South Africa.
The individual challenge between the top riders sets the scene for the event with points being accumulated towards the overall teams challenge. Individual champions in the different disciplines will also be crowned.
The progression of the sport has soared to new levels and the world’s best flowriders are set to push the envelope of the unique action sport at the infamous D-Rex – the world’s biggest man-made chlorinated wave.
The stiffest competition must be the duo from the US; Eric Silverman and ex SA rider, Greg Lazarus. “I’m so excited to be coming out to South Africa again!” Silverman exclaimed. “This is going to be the biggest event in the sport’s history and I’m stoked to be a part of it”. Silverman is the current title holder after destroying the field in Singapore last year, but he’s going to need to overcome stiff competition from the boys with home ground advantage.
Firm favorites are the South Africans though. Matt Lammers believes he can win the event and has dominated recent South African competitions. Lammers will not easily allow anyone to beat him on his turf and he has great backing from an incredibly in form Clayton Barker and Paolo Falconer as well as perennial tour winner, Billy Tennant.
Singapore’s hot prospect, Alfian Affandi, is the competition’s dark horse and is looking likely to take out a few of the title hopefuls as he rises to international fame within the sport. A relative newcomer to flowriding, Affandi has accumulated a very respectable bag of tricks and is ready to unleash what the best of Asia has to offer. The Chileans have been keeping their team a secret and always rock up and let their riding do the talking, as do the crew from Dubai who have vowed to bring the heat!
Saturday 8th October will have the opening round and quarter final heats as well as the Best Trick event to add some fireworks to the event. This will be followed by a massive free concert with SA’s top bands, Locnville, The Graeme Watkins Project and City Bowl Mizers. Entrance is free to the public for the entire event and the public are encouraged to wear their green and gold in support of The Springboks and our competing South Africans at Wave House.
All the action concludes on Sunday 9th October with the historic finals and closing ceremony with The Meditators.
The Malibu FLOW Championships presented by the City of Durban would not be possible without our amazing sponsors, Malibu and the City of Durban as well as Quiksilver, The Gateway Hotel, Gateway Theatre of Shopping and Primi Xpress.
