The Red Bull Manny Mania amateur skate contest took place this past sunday with 50 of South Africa’s best amateur skateboarders competing for a trip to New York where Red Bull Manny Mania will host it’s World Final. It was 20 year old, Simon Sitpcich who was crowned South Africa’s winner.
Emphasis was on the word “Manny = Manual” in which the athletes would have to do manual tricks or any flip variation into a manual in order to score points on the specially designed ramps built by Dave De Wit. The event kicked off with 50 entrants all vying for the winners podium and to score that epic trip to New York in which the winner will be accompanied by Red Bull’s Field Marketing Manager – Ed Morrison.
Each heat had 5 competitors in which the top 2 riders from each heat would move on into the Semi-Finals. The weather was perfect and the event had a great spectator ambience which made all the competitors perform to their best level and it came down to whoever had the best BMT on the day…
Standouts were Simon Stipcich, George “GVB” Van Blerk and the Dlamini brothers…
The Finals were highly anticipated in which some of SA’s top skaters were all in one heat to try and take down the gold and win that awesome five star trip to NYC.
The Final was a 25 minute heat, in the first 10-15 minutes it was looking like it was going to be between George or Dlamini for the win as Simon was just not getting his groove, George was kicking into top gear with a few grinds to Kickflip out – Manuals, Dlamini was doing some awesome Switch variel flips to manual out and was owning it.
Dlamini was looking like the man to beat until Simon got a second wind and just like a playstation superstar he was throwing down everything from Nollie, backside flips to switch flips all to manual out…He was just unstoppable!
After a tough final battle against some of the best local skateboarding talent on offer, including Kieran Mans and George Van Blerk, Stipcich took top honors and won the “Gold” so to speak… A good turnout of young skaters took to the purpose built ramps and did amazing things for the judges, among them Pro skater Christi Wiehahn, who said he was very happy with the performance from the young guns and had high hopes for the sport after this contest. Simon will know head off to New York for the Red Bull Manny Mania World Amateur Final where the winner of that contest will get a chance to compete in the Pro contest the following day. He will join other athletes from across the globe who are all vying to be crowned, the Red Bull Manny Mania – World Champion.
